AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination

Gulf Middle School offers the AVID program. The program is designed to assist students in the academic “middle”. Students in the AVID program will have a year long AVID class where they will learn important skills to be successful in their core classes. Strategies will include Cornell Notes, the use of the The AVID Binder, study skills, reading and writing skills and cooperative learning skills (WICOR).  The program will also assist and motivate students for advanced course work and focus their interests. The end-goal of the AVID program is to help students become prepared for college without having to take remedial coursework. Some students in AVID may be the first in their families to go to college.

AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap

by preparing all students for college readiness

and success in a global society.

We are looking for our 2025-26 AVID Elective students

If you are interested in becoming an AVID student at GMS and you are entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade,  please fill out the application, including parent and teacher recommendations. Entering 6th graders only require one teacher recommendation. The AVID program requires commitment and the desire to be successful.
